The orangery first sprang up on the fashionable homes of seventeenth century aristocrats. The forebear of the modern conservatory, most would agree that orangeries continue to be an elegant, stylish and ‘aristocratic’ addition to any home.
As well as creating a fabulous feature on your home and giving you more space, orangeries are a particularly strong investment.
The fundamental difference between an orangery and a conservatory is the structure. A conservatory is generally regarded as a temporary non-integral part of the property. An orangery, with its greater mass of columns, pilasters and classic details creates a striking visual impact and contributes to the overall appeal of a client’s home with a robust and permanent presence.
Orangery Design

Although similar in some ways to a conservatory or greenhouse, the fundamental difference with an orangery is that the bulk of the structure is built from stone rather than glass. Instead the glass is incorporated naturally into the structure.
Initially intended as the perfect place for wealthy Georgians to tend to citrus trees that would never survive conditions in the UK, the orangery was always more than just a greenhouse. Like a folly or summerhouse, orangeries were always intended as a clear display of wealth. Today an orangery continues to add an element of distinction to a home but with the more sensible prospect of adding to the value of the house by essentially creating another room.
